Basingstoke has a population of 107642. In the meadows about Barrowden, Wakerly, Harringworth, Thorpe, Caldecot and Bringhurst immense quantities of hay were carried away. Snow especially over higher ground but there is a greater risk to lower levels too with the cold air in place. Even in the neighbourhood of Wakefield the hay was seen floating in the fields and near Barnsley a great deal was either washed away or rendered useless except for litter.

The damage is estimated at not less than 1,500. Showery conditions will follow although some brighter weather is also possible later in the week. Of course totals in the areas affected in the articles would have been much higher.
